Advantages

Advantages related to the use of the technology:

  • The kraft pulp industry requires new processes to produce tall oil that would allow reducing costs associated with the consumption of chemical substances and obtaining a high quality tall oil. In response to this need, a method for generating tall oil from sodium sesquisulfate was developed. This method is mainly based on using a sodium sesquisulfate solution to acidify tall oil soap and produce tall oil. This innovation allows decreasing the consumption of sulfuric acid in tall oil plants, as it may replace up to 100% of this chemical substance by a sodium sesquisulfate solution obtaining tall oil suitable to be used as fuel.
Estimated saving by using the technology:

  • To produce tall oil from sulfuric acid, the consumption of sodium hydroxide within the chlorine dioxide plant and the consumption of sulfuric acid within the tall oil plant must be considered. The cost is 426 USD/ton of tall oil.
  • To produce tall oil from sodium sesquisulfate, the cost of sodium and sodium sulfate hydroxide within the chlorine dioxide plant must be considered. When using sodium sesquisulfate within the tall oil plant, it is not necessary to supply another chemical product. The associated cost is 310 USD/ton of tall oil.
